Did You Know?
Refrigeration & Insulation: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, wood chips and sawdust were used to insulate ice blocks and in early mechanical refrigeration systems.
Explosives: During both World Wars, cellulose from wood was used in cordite, a smokeless propellant for ammunition and a key component in explosives.
Alcohol: Wood chips were traditionally added during fermentation to enhance the flavor and color of spirits.
Animal Bedding & Food Flavoring: Chips from woods like applewood and hickory were used in animal bedding to add flavor when the meat was later smoked or cooked.
Primitive Roads: In swampy areas, wood chips were often spread to create makeshift paths.
Medicinal Willow: Willow bark and leaves contain salicin, a natural precursor to aspirin, used as a pain reliever for over 4,000 years.
